(英) The dynamics of biological communities arethe result of social interactions among components thatspan multiple scales. In addition, differences betweenpopulation-level dynamics and species-level dynamics arepoorly understood and have generated ambiguity regardingthe concepts of what constitutes a population and a species.In the present study, Dictyostelia was employed as a modelcommunity with which to clarify these concepts. The distributionsof logarithmically ranked populations could beexplained by unified neutral theory and a zero-sum patchgame, while distributions of ranked species could not beexplained by unified neutral theory. Furthermore, nonmetricmultidimensional scaling analysis and principalcomponent analysis demonstrated that species occupieddistinct niches, supporting the idea that species-level organizationcould be explained by adaptive structure, whilepopulation-level organization could be explained by unifiedneutral theory. Genetic structures of both populationsand species, and the differences in the characteristic timescales of these communities, based on actual and deducedpoint mutation rates and speciation rates, were also examined.The results indicated that species of eastern JapaneseDictyostelia may have behaved adaptively over along time scale, while populations may have behaved inaccordance with unified neutral theory over a shorter timescale.
